How to reach Aachen

By airplane

Aachen lies in the heart of Europe and in the border triangle to the Netherlands and to Belgium. It is in close proximity to many international airports in:

Germany

Cologne (Köln) / Bonn Airport (CGN): Approx. 1 / 1.5 hours train ride to Aachen.
Train has to be changed at Köln HBF.

Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS): Approx. 1 / 1.5 hours train ride to Aachen.

Frankfurt Airport (FRA): Approx. 2 hours train ride to Aachen; some connections go directly go to Aachen, while others require a change of trains at Köln HBF.

Belgium

Brussels Airport (BRU): Approx. 2 hours train ride to Aachen. A local train runs to Bruxelles Midi, from where the high-speed train Thalys runs directly to Aachen.

The Netherlands

Maastricht Airport (MST): Maastricht airport is quite small but only 40 km away from Aachen. Access to the public transport system is limited, thus a taxi would be the better choice. For more information on how to go from Maastricht airport to Aachen, see here.

Amsterdam / Schiphol (AMS): Approx. 3-4 hours train ride to Aachen.

France

Airport Charles de Gaulle or Orly (CDG): Paris’s main station, Paris de Nord, is about a 2.5 hours train ride away from Aachen with the high-speed train Thalys.

By train

Aachen is linked to the international railway network. Every two hours, the high-speed train Thalys operates between Paris and Cologne via Aachen. In between, the ICE trains run from Frankfurt to Brussels via Aachen. There are good regional connections to the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf. An hourly connection to Heerlen (which takes approx. 30 minutes) links Aachen to the Dutch railway system.

  • Aachen HBF (Main Station): Aachen’s main station is close to the city center and it is possible to walk to most of the hotels. However, taxis are also available in front of the main station. Please note that it is common to pay cash. Several bus connections also run from the main station to the city center, e.g., to the bus stop Elisenbrunnen, which lies in the middle of the city center, just 2 walking minutes away from the cathedral and the market.

  • Aachen West: This is the nearest station to the conference site, however, not all trains stop here. The exit lies underneath a bridge.

From Aachen West to Main Building and SuperC: To reach the Main Building and the SuperC you have to leave the underpass on your left, after which you immediately turn right into Geschwister-Scholl-Straße. Follow the road until Templergraben and then turn left. You will see the conference site (Main Building and Super C building) on the left hand side (approx. 5-10 minutes walk from the station).

From Aachen West to the Center for Computing and Communication: To reach the Center for Computing and Communication, you have to leave the underpass on your right. Follow the road (Seffenter Weg) until you reach Kopernikusstraße, where you turn left. You will see the building on the right hand side (approx. 5 minutes walk from the station).

By car

Highways (Autobahn) 4 (from Cologne) and 44 (from Düsseldorf) go to Aachen. Please see the web site of your hotel regarding detailed directions. Parking is possible in several parking houses, located throughout the city center. An alternative is to park at "Bendplatz" located in Kühlwetterstraße, which is only a 15 minutes walk to the main venues. Parking at Bendplatz is available for 4 Euros / day.
